Sports quotes

An attendee in a recent speechwriting workshop asked me to recommend a good reference book of sports quotes.  Since many of you might share the same need, here’s my recommendation:

Sports Quotes:  The Insiders’ View of the Sports World (by Bob Abel and Michael Valenti).  This is an old book, but absolutely outstanding.

A few of my favorites:

“We gave him an unlimited expense account and he’s already exceeded it.”  (Washington Redskins president Edward Bennett Williams, discussing coach George Allen).

“A champion is one who gets up when he can’t.”  (Jack Dempsey)

“Whether I’m in the lead or not, I feel I’m always in control.”  (long-distance runner Rick Wohlhuter)
